New treasurer of Kiwanis Children's Fund selected

Jul 23, 2019

During the 104th Annual Kiwanis International Convention, Norm Velnes of Winnipeg, Canada, was selected treasurer of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund for the remainder of the 2018-19 year. Velnes will replace James “Jim” Dooley of Metamora, Illinois, who stepped down for health reasons.

Dooley, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Peoria, was appointed to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund Board as a trustee in 2015. He has a distinguished history with Kiwanis International, including serving as chair for the Americas during The Formula membership campaign. He also served as governor of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District.

“Jim Dooley’s selfless contributions to the work of Kiwanis and, in particular, the advancement of the goals of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund as a trustee and as treasurer are difficult to measure,” said George E.H. Cadman, president of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund. Jim invariably put Kiwanis ahead of self in all he did. He brought wisdom, insight and a great sense of humor to our work. His guidance will be sorely missed, and we are all hopeful that Jim will be healthy and active again soon.”

Velnes, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg, served as governor of the Western Canada District. He was appointed to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund Board of Trustees in 2015. Velnes brings a wealth of fundraising knowledge and experience to the board. He is the fundraising consultant for The Velnes Group, past chair of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners and former vice chair at Winnipeg Presbytery Foundation, United Church of Canada.

“Norm has been instrumental in leading the work of our Development Committee in the past two years, serving also for the past three years on the Finance Committee,” Cadman said. His background, experience and leadership abilities will serve the Children’s Fund well.”

After completing his term as treasurer, Velnes will serve as president-elect of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund Board and will be president during the 2020-2021 Kiwanis year.
