Celebrate the June solstice with new fundraising ideas

Jun 20, 2016

Today is the 2016 summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Or, for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the shortest day of the year.

For those of us north of the equator, we have more time to do good today. While you are enjoying the extra daylight, take a moment to plan your next fundraiser for the Kiwanis Children’s Fund or The Eliminate Project. Below are some ideas that will raise funds and take advantage of the sunlight.

Car Wash: This tried-and-true fundraiser is a natural choice for summer since groups of just about all sizes can run a profitable car wash. Charge extra to have tire rims polished.

Water Balloon Fight: What better way to stay cool than with a water balloon fight? Designate a field, park or open space as your “Splash Zone” then spread the word that you are organizing the largest water balloon fight in community history. Charge per filled water balloon or make it a team event by charging a registration fee. You could even sell snacks and drinks to raise extra money.

Ice cream social:
Who doesn’t love ice cream on a hot summer day? Approach a local ice cream or frozen yogurt shop or grocer, and ask if they would provide the ice cream and cones. Some shops will host a charity ice cream cone day and provide a portion of the proceeds to your cause.

If you are experiencing cooler weather and shorter days, don’t let the winter solstice get you down. We have some ideas for you too!

Board game tournament: Replace the common poker tournament with something more fun and beginner-friendly–a board game tournament. Choose a fun game that most people are likely to be familiar with, such as Sorry, Monopoly, Clue or Trouble. Register four-person teams or have individuals play for themselves. To raise fund, charge an entry fee.

Hot chocolate soiree:
Replace ice cream with hot chocolate. Ask local stores to donate the ingredients, and get creative with toppings.
