The truth about planned giving

May 20, 2016

Some people are hesitant to talk about planned giving because they don’t know much about it—or what they do know is based on misunderstandings. But planned giving can be easy to understand.

Essentially, it is a type of gift tailored to help a donation go further.

One great thing about this giving opportunity: It’s a sure way to ensure your values and guarantee that the Kiwanis International Foundation will extend your Kiwanis impact to change children’s lives—even beyond your own.

Kiwanis International Foundation has a number of planned gift options that may be right for you.
  • The most common planned gift is a bequest—when you include the Kiwanis International Foundation as a beneficiary in your will or trust.
  • Naming our foundation as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or IRA is a great way to make a legacy gift, particularly if it is a pre-tax plan. These distributions would otherwise be taxed.
  • If you have a life insurance policy that is no longer a significant piece of your estate plan, you might consider assigning ownership to the Kiwanis International Foundation or making our foundation the beneficiary. By donating the policy to our foundation, you may be entitled to a tax benefit during your lifetime.
  • You can even make a gift that will provide an income with a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust.
Regardless of the giving option you choose, you can tailor it to your own needs and wishes. Most important, your donation will support the important work of the Kiwanis International Foundation. Funds donated to the endowment help support Kiwanis-family clubs and districts through grants for projects that serve children.
