Remembering former trustee Melvin “Mel” Cowart (1927–2014)

Former Kiwanis International Foundation Trustee Mel Cowart

Mel Cowart, a longtime Kiwanian and former trustee of the Kiwanis International Foundation, passed away on August 28, 2014, at his home in Pasadena, Texas.


Mel had been  a member of the Pasadena Kiwanis Club since 1975, serving multiple times as secretary and president. As a Kiwanian, he earned  many honors and awards from Kiwanis International and the Texas-Oklahoma District, including:

  • Life Member Status
  • George F. Hixson Fellowship
  • Tablet of Honor
  • Heritage Society membership
  • Founders Circle membership
  • Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis Foundation C.T. Bush Award
Mel and his wife, Mary, also provided a gift to help fund the construction of the Pathway to the Future at Kiwanis International headquarters in Indianapolis. Mel served on the Board of Directors of the Pasadena Kiwanis Club, the Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis Foundation Board of Trustees and the Kiwanis International Foundation Board of Trustees (2009–10).

Mel earned a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University and his Doctorate of Law from South Texas College of Law. In Pasadena, Mel and Mary were avid supporters of many local charities. In fact, the Salvation Army Sports Pavilion in Pasadena is named in honor of Mel and Mary. Other organizations that received their support include Children’s Miracle Network, Pasadena Philharmonic Society, YMCA and San Jacinto College Foundation. Mel was named Citizen of the Year by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in 2008 and received the Distinguished Citizen Award for the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation in 2014.
